Nor
Nor was assigned the story Space For The Human.
I was moved by this story, from a woman who volunteered as a phone link service 'pod leader'. It raises themes of communication and human connection, weaving in and out of formal/informal systems and institutions. As a health worker myself I recognized the delicate balance or tension the story described: between formal processes on the one hand, and grassroots, 'human' responses on the other. As a hub connecting volunteers and service users I was reminded of the telephone switchboard operators of old. I based my sculpture on this archetype; a woman bending over her wires, striving to connect each part to the right place. Like the old telephone operators, this story seemed to speak to a need for the human touch in any new system developed to help people. The need to improvise, and connect to the heart.
